What is the Malton Community Building Project?
The project is created to promote greater civic engagement and community development in Malton by empowering adult and youth leadership in the South Asian Community with the aim of developing and strengthening new and existing formal and informal community networks. The Malton Community Building Project focuses on community engagement, collaboration, parent education, health, literacy, recreation, support, training and sustainability. “South Asian Community” refers to people from the Indian sub-continent and from the South Asian Diaspora.

What are the major benefits?
The benefits are substantial and include: Services are in English, Punjabi, Hindi, and Urdu To support residents from Malton’s South Asian Community in parent education by providing training in parenting, health and nutrition, and literacy; creating support networks; and hosting an annual “family fair” type of event to promote awareness of community services and programs (possibly incorporated into the Malton Community Festival). To recruit, train and engage volunteer community leaders from Malton’s South Asian Community in both formal leadership roles (e.g. committees and boards) and informal leadership roles by evolving new informal volunteer-led activities and/or social networks, using a paid-honoraria approach to off-set potential cost-prohibiting factors such as food, transportation or child care expenses. To encourage and nurture greater awareness of and participation in existing and/or new community programs by residents of Malton’s South Asian Community. To develop a Malton-based communication strategy to promote social and recreational services available to the Malton Community.
